Blakely Art Studio

A cliffside haven for creative solitude.

Tucked into a forested bluff on Blakely Island, this intimate art studio was designed by Olson Kundig and built by Needham Construction as a serene, light-filled creative workshop for its owner. This detached backyard structure makes a powerful artistic statement—suspended in the trees, open to the view, and carefully tuned to the daily movement of light.

Architecture that disappears into its setting.

A frameless glass corner stretches toward the water, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. The studio’s prow-like form cantilevers slightly beyond the cliff, making it feel as though it hovers above the landscape—an effect as structural as it is poetic.

Materiality with restraint and purpose.

Vertical grain cedar and fir line the walls and ceiling, creating a quiet warmth that complements the steel and glass structure. Every element is finely detailed but deliberately understated, letting the setting—and the creative work it shelters—take center stage.

Part of a larger legacy.

This studio is the final addition to a decades-long collaboration between Olson Kundig and Needham Construction on this remote and beautiful island property. Built alongside several earlier structures on the site, it reflects the same enduring values of precision, permanence, and place.

We specialize in crafting sophisticated custom homes that embrace the natural beauty and unique lifestyle of the San Juan Islands.
